Independent Football ... Ramco celebrate centenary in style
Ramco broke the centenary game hoodoo which has haunted Riverland teams over the past two seasons with an emphatic 105 point victory over East Murray on Saturday.
Without a doubt the victory was sealed in the first quarter when the Roosters stormed to an eleven goal first term whilst holding the visitors to a solitary point.
Ramco’s on ball brigade was once again in control and Hole in ruck was hitting his onballers with ease and this was equating to easy centre clearances which enabled the Roosters to establish their early ascendency.
Ramco didn’t have a passenger early as they had winners all over the ground. David Watkins was relishing his move to the backline and was providing great run from defence where he was well supported by Scott Marr who was to have his best game for the year, and Geehman who was also running off and providing options.
Up forward Ramco were being well served by Bevan, Jacob Hole and Craig Davis who was crumbing well in front of goal.
Towards the end of the term however disaster struck for the Roosters with one of their key forwards Nathan Rogers going down with what appeared to be a serious knee injury. This certainly unsettled the Roosters as they were not the same team from that point on.
The second term saw the Tigers come out much more determined and it showed on the scoreboard. They had their best term of the match booting three goals and they were suddenly applying great pressure all over the ground.
Andriske was superb in defence mopping up time and time again whilst Fuss and White were also in everything. Collins booted two goals and the game suddenly had a competitive feel about it.
The Tigers had tightened up on Marr in the middle who had the first term to himself and this stemmed the supply to the Ramco forwards.
The third term was a very even affair and for the first time this year Ramco failed to score a major in the whole quarter.
Ramco still had plenty of the ball but were wasting it, going forward and not being as clean as they should have been for a top side. This is something that must be worked on as they come up against the better sides.
Zimmerman on the wing was one who was getting plenty of the ball, along with Donnelly who spent the third term on the wing as well.
With the game already decided, the final term was a chance for Ramco to assert their dominance on the scoreboard and give the big crowd something to celebrate on centenary day.
Ramco did overrun the Tigers again in the final term booting five goals to one but there is no doubt that the Tigers could be pleased with their effort after quarter time, as they put up a real effort applying great pressure all over the ground.
Pittaway fitted in the Ramco line up with two majors for the day, but the most pleasing signs for the Roosters’ was the form of Watkins at half back and probably Zimmerman on the wing.
The Roosters now are looking forward to the one week break before they meet the three other top sides all in consecutive weeks.

RIVERLAND FOOTBALL ... Six straight for league leading Magpies
By Brooksy and Macca
The clash between Waikerie and Loxton North at Panther Park was a real arm-wrestle up to half time, but an eleven goal to three performance by the Magpies in the second half took the wind out of Loxton North’s sails – resulting in a 59 point win, the sixth in succession for the red hot reigning premiers.
The wind-blown oval at Loxton North is not famous for its amazing atmosphere and this clash was not a spectacle to be remembered for the ages.
The strangling, stifling, hard at it approach by Waikerie make games more dour than free-flowing and it was more of the same on Saturday. This style of play however, has the Magpies sitting atop the RFL ladder with a six game winning streak. Their style of play is one which is working effectively against all teams and is one that will stand up come finals time.
On Saturday, Waikerie played its third consecutive away match and one could sense a ‘flatness’ as the Magpies’ machine was not as well-oiled as usual. To win all of these away games is a huge effort, with the points picked up on the road significant, if the Magpies are to cement the minor premiership in the coming weeks.
High in Waikerie’s best players were veteran Nathan Tape, whose composure and ball use stood out during the ‘good in patches’ contest. Youngster Gerard Dutton continued to impress in the midfield – his acceleration with ball in hand is as good as anyone in the competition. Given Dutton is still eligible for under 18’s shows what a big future this young man has not only in the RFL but in bigger leagues in a metropolitan setting.
The energy and enthusiasm shown by livewire forward Matthew Gibson was a highlight for Waikerie, as he slotted three majors to go with some impressive and courageous marks. Waikerie’s ‘Darren Jarman-esc’ forward Tom Hyde continued his solid form, bagging five goals and putting him in second position on the goal kicking table.
Ben Venning continued to present himself as a lead-up centre-half forward and never seems to get the personal rewards in the form of goals. However, it is ‘goal assists’ and creating contests for Waikerie’s smaller brigade that is his real strength. A big bag of majors is not too far away for one-gloved man they call “Beaver.”
With significant injuries still in the Waikerie senior squad, the break has come at a good time for a club whose depth has been tested over the last few weeks. Whilst the Magpies were not at their sparkling best, it is two premiership points nonetheless and reaffirms the Magpies as the RFL’s measuring stick.

RIVERLAND FOOTBALL ... Waikerie U18’s display a close match by improved side
by Aaron and Henry
It was a much improved effort from Waikerie against Loxton North, despite going down 9.9 (63) to 8.2 (50) at the Panthers’ home ground in surprisingly good weather (for Loxton North).
Captain Michael Beelitz won the toss and elected to kick towards the scoreboard end. Waikerie got off to a slow start and allowed Loxton North to open a handy early lead as they kicked 4.3 whilst Waikerie managed only two straight. Both these goals came from the boot of centre half forward Johno Walding, one a crumbing goal in the goal square and the other from a set shot. On baller Jake Trimble continued his form from last week picking up nine possessions for the quarter as well as three tackles.
In the second quarter Waikerie challenged Loxton North all over the ground and were more than prepared to put their bodies on the line. This was lead by Joseph Haines and Captain Michael Beelitz. Joseph in a best on ground performance was able to win numerous contests despite being out numbered whilst Michael laid a massive hit on Loxton North’s full forward John Reichstein. Michael was sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes; however, the hit was completely in the play. Waikerie finished the term with 1.1, with Johno Walding kicking his third, whilst Loxton North kicked 1.3.
Waikerie seemed to get better as the game progressed and could have gone into the three quarter time break with only a slight deficit however two late goals to Loxton North, which came about from a drop in intensity, kept the Panthers well in front. Waikerie kicked 2.1 for the term with both gaols coming from Brad Gay who had a stellar third quarter that included 14 possessions. Loxton North were able to marginally out score Waikerie with 2.2. Waikerie is developing a strong half backline with the two Whites, Mitch and Patrick. Both defend well and also give Waikerie great rebound from the defensive half.
It was always going to be a tough effort for Waikerie to win the game after Loxton North kicked the first goal of the final quarter opening up a 24 point lead. However Waikerie showed great heart and some Magpie fighting spirit to give themselves a chance. Waikerie kept the ball in their attacking half for much of the quarter but were only able to kick three straight goals, one each to Daniel Conley and Jake Nourse and Johno Walding for his fourth. Midway through the quarter Loxton North kicked their second goal giving them 2.1 for the term, enough for a 13 point victory.
This game was clearly Waikerie’s best effort in the last five games.

Riverland Hockey ... A Men back on the winners list
Riverland Hockey ventured to Loxton on Saturday for the first time in two years, as Loxton returned their home games to grass roots hockey, hosting matches on their well prepared grass pitches.
Waikerie A Men were in fine form and looked comfortable throughout, defeating Loxton 5/3. The A Women again fielded a team missing key players but did extremely well losing 3/nil and not conceding a goal in the second half, against the form team of the ladies competition.
The B grade men recovered from a slow start to go down in a high scoring affair 5/4 against Loxton with a controversial ‘advantage goal’, the difference on the scoreboard. Both of the B grade ladies had wins, with the Blacks defeating Loxton 1/nil and the Whites defeating Renmark 2/1.
The Under 18 men went on their winning way with a 2/1 win over Loxton and the Under 18 women went down to Loxton 1/nil. The Under 14’s played Berri and went down 2/nil while the Under 11’s had a win against Loxton 1/nil.
Hockey now takes a two week break for the school holidays and resumes at Berri on Saturday, July 18. Training continues this week for the seniors, with the men doing some ‘divot’ maintenance from 6 p.m. this Thursday.

A Men
Waikerie 5 Loxton 3
Best Players; B Kroehn, G Simpfendorfer, R Edwards, A Fulwood, J Haese
Goal Scorers; R Edwards 2, L Seabrook 1, J Haese 1, C Traeger-Squires 1
Waikerie travelled to Loxton for the round eight clash on grass and came away with the points against Loxton following an entertaining display. Waikerie began the game welcoming Nick Gogol and Lachlan Seabrook back into the side and youngster Jackson Haese, made his debut in the senior side, after some promising performances in the under 18’s and B grade. Waikerie were on the attack early with Jason Redemski providing an early lob into the circle catching Loxton unaware, finding Ryan Edwards on the bounce who put the ball through ‘mid wicket’ for four, but sadly missed the goals.
Loxton responded quickly through Karl Hennig who surged forward and took a shot on goal which was well saved by goalie Mark Kroehn. Veteran Edwards again found himself in the thick of the action as Brenton Kroehn worked hard in the midfield to get the ball into the circle, as Edwards took two shots on goal, both saved by the Loxton custodian.
Waikerie earned their first short corner six minutes in and Brenton Kroehn slipped the ball right to Nitschke whose shot hit the side of the goal narrowly missing the big opening. Waikerie scored their first goal two minutes later as Lachlan Seabrook swooped on a deflection from the Loxton goalie to put Waikerie on the board. Waikerie were well on top as Brenton Kroehn and Alex Fulwood dominated the midfield providing many opportunities for their forwards and Grant Simpfendorfer was proving impassable at half back moving the ball forward to set up play.
Edwards again was in the thick of the action winning a penalty stroke after a tight shot on goal. Unfortunately his stroke was well saved by the Loxton goalie who lunged quickly to his right to make contact with the Edwards shot. Again Loxton responded through Hennig who broke through the midfield to take a shot on goal and win a short corner. They went left off the short to Nigel Rutherford whose shot on goal went in, but was too high!
Waikerie again responded through Redemski who again threw the ball up and over the defence and into the circle to find Edwards, unattended, who this time trapped the ball and went left then right to find the goalie floundering, before he slammed home Waikerie’s second.
With five minutes left in the half Loxton had three consecutive short corners and scored on the third in a scramble as Karl Hennig swatted home a goal to get Loxton on the scoreboard. With less than a minute left in the half Lachlan Seabrook traversed the Loxton defence to get the ball into veteran Edwards, who after a scramble looked set to push through for his second. His ‘soft’ shot dribbled across the goal line behind the goalie to find Jackson Haese in good position to calmly finish off the goal, seeing Waikerie go into the half time break with a 3/1 lead.
The second half began in spectacular fashion, as Seabrook squirreled the ball through to Edwards, whose cross into a diving Clayton Traeger-Squires, who just missed the deflection while colliding with the advancing Loxton goalie. Loxton hit back three minutes later with a scrambled goal from winger Nigel Rutherford who snuck one past keeper Kroehn.
Loxton then went on to win two short corners which were well saved by goalie Kroehn whose form was keeping Waikerie well in the match. Waikerie needed to respond and Lachlan Seabrook stepped up with a great ball to Nitschke out wide, who got the ball quickly into Brenton Kroehn, who drew the short corner. Seabrook stepped up for the shot but his attempt went wide. Three minutes later Seabrook again attacked getting the ball to Edwards who fired home a great reverse stick goal, taking Waikerie out to a 4/2 lead.
Loxton were not going to lie down and fought well for another short corner and score through Sean Burgess with 12 minutes remaining, to sneak closer, but again Waikerie drew away with Alex Fulwood scrambling the ball into Edwards whose shot came off the goalie to fall to Clayton Traeger-Squires who slotted home the sealer.
Best players for Waikerie were Brenton Kroehn again commanding respect for his work rate and possession, Ryan Edwards who created many scoring opportunities up forward, Grant Simpfendorfer who continually broke down the Loxton offence and Alex Fulwood whose efforts in tight, thwarted Loxton attacking moves. Mark Kroehn deserves a mention for making several timely saves and the debut of youngster Jackson Haese was encouraging as he seemed to take the step up in his stride.
The team now has a couple of weeks off to train before games resume on the last weekend of the school holidays, when Waikerie meet Berri on turf on Saturday July 18.

A Women
Waikerie 0 Loxton 3
Best Players; C Levi, J Wilson, N Morey, N Rayner, T Weinmann
The Waikerie A women took on the mighty Loxton team keen to make amends for their last meeting on turf. Waikerie started tentatively and Loxton had an early score on the board through Sara Jensen who was running rampant through the Waikerie defence. Waikerie settled into a tighter pattern of play with the experience of Nina Rayner shining through. Tania Weinmann and Sarah Wilson were working hard in defence, while Brianna Seabrook used her stick skill and strength to thwart any Loxton attack. Keeper Levi also was defending well and kicking out strongly. Loxton persisted with their aggressive team play and eventually outsmarted the Waikerie defence to go to the break three up.
Waikerie had had their attacking chances too with Maxine Morath and Lauren Dutton working well together up the left side of the field, running into the attacking twenty five. Maddy Miller in midfield also used her body well to out position her defenders.
The second half was a dogged affair with neither team able to break free. Loxton continued to attack but were well held up by Seabrook, Anna Kroehn and the Wilson sisters who continue to show improvement and confidence every week. Waikerie drove into attack many times, as well through Seabrook and Kim Fulwood who came into the game in the second half, with a more determined effort on the wing. Waikerie held Loxton scoreless in this half and this was a great effort from everyone.
Many thanks to Nina Rayner whose cool head under pressure in defence and willingness to guide and encourage the younger players into position was wonderful. Well done to Tania Weinmann who had another strong gutsy game at fullback, a position she is making her own, while Maxine Morath had some promising runs in attack on her wing and young Jocelyn Wilson who combined well with Brianna to form an aggressive and skilful defensive unit. Don’t forget training will continue this week and in a fortnight for our next game on turf against Berri on July 18.

Waikerie 0 Loxton 3
Best Players; Lauren Dutton, Sarah Wilson, Ashley Baker, Jocelyn Wilson.
Waikerie and Loxton met on the Loxton grass for the first time this year and for the most part it was an evenly contested game. Waikerie started much more aggressively than previous weeks with Brianna Seabrook and Lauren Dutton working well together, bringing the ball out of defence and initiating attack. Waikerie had some early opportunities but failed to capitalize with a lack of teamwork being their undoing. Loxton had plenty of runners and plenty of workers while Waikerie were relying on too few to do the hard yards. To their credit Waikerie kept Loxton out for the first half with Sarah and Jocelyn Wilson persisting with strong man on man defence and skillful stick work.
The second half saw Waikerie just drop the intensity slightly, with not enough attack on the ball, while Loxton picked up the pace and after a while managed to easily get one past the inexperienced Waikerie defence. Waikerie still had a good percentage of the play and had several runs into attack but just could not finish off. Young Ashley Baker on her wing was a bright light of run and skill and teamed up nicely at times with the midfielders in Nikki Morey and Janali Gartley. Well done also to Amelia Greer who had some nice stick deflections on her wing.
Waikerie deserved to get a draw out of this game and had done well to keep Loxton to only one goal. However, Waikerie needs all of its players to work together and contribute evenly.
Special mention to Lauren Dutton who  ran hard all game and all over the ground, Sarah Wilson who was a rock in defence, Ashley Baker who showed her more experienced teammates how to run and get around the defence and to Jess Layton in goals who showed much better  commitment to the ball coming forward to attack with aggression.

Under 14 Mixed
Waikerie 0 Berri 2
Best Players; B Morgan, C Catford, A Baker
The under 14’s faced the younger Berri team on Saturday at Loxton. Berri showed their intentions right from the start with a strong run into their forward lines. This was capably cut off and cleared by Daniel Tyler. The other defenders in Brady Dolphin and Braden Morgan worked hard to gain control and work the ball to the forward players. Ashleigh Baker and Ian Smith combined well to run the ball forward with Ashleigh getting a hit into the D, only to be defended and cleared by Berri.
Playing in the middle Caleb Catford showed his determination in stopping the Berri attack and had some good runs forward. Cooper Powardy worked hard all game and combined well with Ryan Law. Ryan in his first year of hockey continues to improve each week and showed lots of run again. He unfortunately was not rewarded part way through the first half with a goal, as his shot just went wide.
Goalie, Riley Noble, was playing his best game so far with strong kicks to clear the ball. Waikerie showed great strength by successfully defending four short corner attempts just before half time.
Berri again started the second half strongly, pushing forward on numerous occasions. Riley again defended well and kicked the ball several times in succession; however Berri was able to get a short corner which they got past to score.
Braden Morgan continued to clear the ball from defence and Tyson Grieger fought hard throughout in the midfield. Caleb combined with Cooper to negate the tight Berri defence, only to see the ball turned over in the D. Monica Hansen made good use of the ball and Deanna Moore contributed out wide on the wing. Chris Tyler and Lachlan Woollatt performed well off the bench, providing much needed run as players tired. Waikerie was unlucky to go down two nil as they had a lot of the play but were unable to capitalise on their opportunities. The under 14’s are starting to come together as a team and their determination is beginning to show, a win is hopefully not too far away.

RIVERLAND NETBALL

A1

Loxton North 50 def Waikerie 23
Best Players – Jacki Miller, Danielle White
Well, unfortunately there was a game last week, but not much to write home about. Lacking height and having to shuffle around the lineup that had brought them so close the week before, the Waikerie girls struggled to produce an outcome anywhere near what they had hoped for.
Some slippery spots on the freshly polished floor created some action, but couldn’t slow the ever consistent good play of Jacki Miller, who started at centre and moved into WD, providing some of Waikerie’s best options for the game.
Helping out across the midcourt were Danielle White from the Under 17’s, whose speed proved irritating for the Loxton defence and Amy Hartwig whose back up and leads were often complimentary to the play of Jacki and Danielle.
Back on home ground this week for another crack.

A3

Loxton North 52 def Waikerie 29
Best Players: Sue Tape, Kym Bannister.
What a rough and tumble end of the court for the defences’ this week. Nat and Kym did well to hold their strong tactical attacking opponents. Claire, Sue, Rachel and Zoe kept the mid court strong, while Ash and Mel had the task of shooting.
A disappointing score line considering the physical effort the girls put in.
Thanks to Deb, Jodie and Karina for always lending a helping hand. Thanks to Zoe Dick for stepping up to A3 this week.

B1

Loxton North 39 drew Waikerie 39
Best Players: Maxine Lee-Morath, Laureen Burdett.
Once again Saturday morning came around and Waikerie were still scrambling to make a team for the 1.30 p.m. start.
Thanks to Michelle Jenke for organizing Amy Seelander and Maxine Lee-Morath. What a huge difference these two ladies made in the goal circle, working brilliantly together and getting good feed in by Michelle and Laureen.
Sarah Bambrick and Nicole Owen fought hard in defence. Naomi Channon and Sophie Cottle working hard on the wing.
Waikerie were six goals up going into the last quarter. Loxton North converted four unanswered goals in quick time which caught the Waikerie girls off guard. A bad coaching choice saw the girls come home with a draw.
Thanks to Simon for scoring. Well done and a big thank you to Amy, Maxine and Michelle.

U17 A
Loxton North 23 lost to Waikerie 43
Best Players: Teri Wenske, Brooke Rhode
The girls came out firing this week from the first whistle. The first half saw great attacking, with Brooke Rohde making fantastic leads and feeding the ball accurately into Teri Wenske who shot well. With speed, Emily Hillier, Danielle White and Breanna Thomson worked well together, attacking through the midcourt.
The second half was dominated by fantastic defence from Stacey Pogarecki and Imogen Builder, reading the play well and taking valuable intercepts. Trephina Gartley stood tall under the ring taking every possible rebound. The girls played a real team game with everyone giving it their all, well done!

U17 C

Waikerie 69 def Barmera Pink 13
Best Players: Kayla Temple, Amy Irrgang
The girls took to the court pumped and ready to win.
The first quarter showed a bit too much confidence from the Waikerie side, but the girls soon settled and began to play their own game.
They all showed excellent team work, especially around the goal circle, with both Ebony and Kelly shooting impressive numbers throughout the whole game.
Tight defence was showed from Amy, Kayla and Courtney who all stuck to their players like glue.
Sarah’s strong leads proved a huge contribution into getting the ball straight to the circle.
A huge thank you to Bonnie Geale who filled in for the girls and shot a nice five goals in the last quarter.
Well done girls, keep it up.

Under 15 A

Loxton North 38 lost to Waikerie 39
Best Players: Teagan Hartwig, Lucy Eldredge
In what was an evenly contested game right from the start, Waikerie knew it was going to take something extra to get over the line and take the two points this week.
There was determination for the ball all around the court from both sides which created a very physical game. An injury at the end of the first quarter saw Rachel Perry go to the bench and some positional changes were required.
Teagan Hartwig went to GA and played a blinder, proving to the coach she can be a tough, physical player, she was ably supported by Kate Thomas in the ring with Monika Dale feeding the girls well.
The defence end was a “Smith” affair with Ashleigh Smith stepping up from the U15B1 side, working well with ever consistent sister, Jess. A little more height certainly didn’t go astray in assisting good rebounding and numerous turnovers.
A sensational third quarter by the entire team with strong mid-court play by Lucy Eldredge and back up from Brianna Lawrie put Waikerie in front and it was down to the wire in the fourth. Luckily the girls dug deep to hang on for a victory, giving the coach a mild coronary along the way.

Under 15 B1

Waikerie 34 def Loxton North 32
Best players: Gaby Taylor, Tessa Liebich
The B1’s powered on as they recorded another hard fought two goal victory over Loxton North. Waikerie bought up Jordan Smith and Sarah Schultz for the day and both girls acquitted themselves extremely well. Jordan slotted into a defensive role and really shone as the game wore on and Sarah who was a revelation at GS, shooting many of Waikerie’s goals. A huge thank you to both these girls for coming up and filling in, they played fantastic netball even if they were nervous.
Waikerie started well leading by three goals at quarter time. Loxton North dominated the first 10 minutes of the second quarter and looked to be heading for a huge victory. With defeat looming, Gaby Taylor dug deep and started to provide a spark through the midcourt, this bought fellow midcourt players Ashlee Little and Molly Hamdorf into the game. Loxton North had turned the game around and led by two goals at half time.
A key move of the game was shifting Isabelle Cottle into GK as her height added to the defence. Abby Neideck’s intimidating defending was outstanding, with her fierce attack of the ball, which led to numerous turnovers. Tessa Liebich at GA who week in and week out gets the opposition’s tallest defender continued playing her usual gutsy game. It was a total team effort after half time with Waikerie running out two goal victors.
The coach, Deb “The Ice Queen“ Hamdorf continues to provide spectators with close games, keeping everyone on the edge of their seats.

U15B2

Loxton North 39 def Waikerie 18
Best Players: Kate Twigden, Emily Kambach.
Loxton North dominated the first quarter with accurate shooting and continued to dominate for the rest of the game. The girls had some great passages of play but unfortunately were unable to even up the score.  All girls put in a great effort as they do every week. Thanks to Milly for filling in.

U15 C1

Waikerie 40 def Renmark White 26
Best Players: Emma Pillion, Rachael Avery
With only the bare seven, Waikerie were off to Renmark for the third week in a row. This was a great win for Waikerie, the girls played safe and steady to prevent injury.
Lucy Hamdorf and Rachael Avery played extremely well in goals showing consistency and accuracy, outsmarting their defence.
Great passes from Sarah Aucote and Emma Pillion assisted the girls to lead in front; Sarah is reliable in her leads from centre pass and speedy intercepts and leaps.
Emma Pillion showed her strength in C with intercept and quick leads working the entire court with ease.
Gabi Winter worked well in WD keeping close to her opposition with good leads following turnovers. Steph Carnell was determined in her defence, zoning her player and never showing defeat. Along with Rachel Dick once again showing her growing skill in GK gaining many turnovers and intercepts.
The coach is proud of the consistency and eagerness of the team and the girls are gaining more confidence in their abilities. They all played exceptionally well, with some laughs between the girls on both teams, to remind us it is just a game. Congratulations on a great win.

U15C2

Loxton North 27 def Waikerie 22
Best Players: Sharna Linke, Lucy Neindorf
Waikerie defensive players were off to a flying start this week, creating numerous turnovers from the first centre pass. Passing and leading through the midcourt was a tad rusty, perhaps due to training being rained out on Wednesday, and saw Waikerie fail to capitalize on many scoring opportunities.
Dannii Tootell took many spectacular intercepts, while Maddie Zeigler played her best game of the season, covering the circle well and rebounding strongly. An inspirational pep talk at three quarter time saw the girls lift their game immensely to claw back the margin and win the last quarter.
Sharna Linke played a fantastic game, in her first for the Riverland competition, showing composure and versatility through the court. Thanks to Kirsten Perry for filling in again and putting in another consistently good performance. The challenge for next week is to repeat the performance of the last quarter for the whole game.
